Three-Coat Stucco Systems

Three-coat stucco is a traditional exterior cladding system recognized for its durability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal. This system involves the sequential application of a scratch coat, a brown coat, and a finish coat. Widely used in residential, commercial, and institutional construction, three-coat stucco offers excellent performance in various climates when installed in accordance with industry standards and building codes.

Building Code and ASTM Standards Compliance

Three-coat stucco systems are required to comply with the guidelines set forth in the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC). These codes establish criteria for material composition, installation methods, and performance to ensure structural integrity and weather resistance.

In addition, ASTM International provides standards critical to the proper design, application, and testing of three-coat stucco systems, including:

  • ASTM C926 – Standard Specification for Application of Portland Cement-Based Plaster: This standard outlines the proper procedures for mixing, proportioning, and applying cement plaster in three-coat systems.
  • ASTM C1063 – Standard Specification for Installation of Lathing and Furring to Receive Interior and Exterior Portland Cement-Based Plaster: This standard details the correct installation of lath, furring, and related accessories to support the stucco application.

Adhering to these standards ensures the stucco system delivers intended performance attributes, such as crack resistance, moisture management, and long-term durability.  Proper framing, job site preparation, mix design, and application techniques are all essential to minimizing the natural cracking that can occur in cement-based stucco systems. It is important to note, however, that due to the nature of cement-based materials, minor cracking may still occur and is not covered by manufacturers warranties. For more information on stucco and cracking, please see our Technical Bulletins.

By following these codes and standards, three-coat stucco systems continue to serve as a reliable and durable cladding solution, meeting modern construction requirements while retaining their timeless aesthetic appeal.
